MediterraneanSea is a sea connected to the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by the Mediterranean basin and almost completely enclosed by land: on the east by the Levant in West Asia, on the north by Anatolia in West Asia and Southern Europe, on the south by North Africa, and on the west almost by the Morocco–Spain border. The Mediterranean Sea covers an area of about 2,500,000 km2 (970,000 sq mi), representing 0.7% of the global ocean surface, but its connection to the Atlantic via the Strait of Gibraltar—the narrow strait that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and separates the Iberian Peninsula in Europe from Morocco in Africa—is only 14 km (9 mi) wide. |
|
| Instances | body of water | A BodyOfWater is a connected body of water with established boundaries marked by either geographical features or conventional borders. |
| | entity | The universal class of individuals. This is the root node of the ontology. |
| | geographic area | A geographic location, generally having definite boundaries. Note that this differs from its immediate superclass Region in that a GeographicArea is a three-dimensional Region of the earth. Accordingly, all astronomical objects other than earth and all one-dimensional and two-dimensional Regions are not classed under GeographicArea. |
| | object | Corresponds roughly to the class of ordinary objects. Examples include normal physical objects, geographical regions, and locations of Processes, the complement of Objects in the Physical class. In a 4D ontology, an Object is something whose spatiotemporal extent is thought of as dividing into spatial parts roughly parallel to the time-axis. |
| | physical | An entity that has a location in space-time. Note that locations are themselves understood to have a location in space-time. |
| | region | A topographic location. Regions encompass surfaces of Objects, imaginary places, and GeographicAreas. Note that a Region is the only kind of Object which can be located at itself. Note too that Region is not a subclass of SelfConnectedObject, because some Regions, e.g. archipelagos, have parts which are not connected with one another. |
| | salt water area | A WaterArea whose Water is saline, e.g. oceans and seas. |
| | sea | Sea is the class of smaller subdivisions of the WorldOcean, typically partially surrounded by land. However, for inland salt water bodies that are sometimes called 'Sea', see SaltLake. |
| | self connected object | A SelfConnectedObject is any Object that does not consist of two or more disconnected parts. |
| | water area | A body which is made up predominantly of water, e.g. rivers, lakes, oceans, etc. |
