An arrangement in which a lender gives money or property to a borrower, and the borrower agrees to return the property or repay the money, usually along with interest, at some future point(s) in time.

Children balloon loanA long-term loan, often a mortgage, that has one large payment (the balloon payment) due upon maturity. Often done when refinancing or a major cash flow event is anticipated.

 indexed loanA loan in which payments change in response to changes in an index such as the Consumer Price Index.
 interest only loanA non-amortized loan in which interest is due at regular intervals until maturity, when the full principal on the loan is due.
 piggybank loanTwo lenders participating in the same loan.
 secured loan
 single payment loanA loan whose principal is due in total with a single payment at maturity.
 unsecured loan
