Iowa and Oto are effectively a single language, with some family variations cross-cutting the tribal affiliations. Speakers believe certain minor differences of pronunciation and vocabulary reflect original tribal dialect distinctions (J. E. Koontz 1996). Missouri dialect has been extinct for many years.
