plastic
Any of a large set of hydrocarbon materials, in the form of polymers, which are usually derived from Petroleum products. Plastics have a tremendous variety of material properties including a wide range of values for opacity, density, ductility etc. and are pervasive in modern Manufacture (-ing).
Relationships
Parents hydrocarbon Any OrganicCompound that contains only Carbon and Hydrogen.
Children polypropylenePolypropylene (PP), also known as polypropene, is a thermoplastic polymer used in a wide variety of applications including packaging and labeling, textiles (e.g., ropes, thermal underwear and carpets), stationery, plastic parts and reusable containers of various types, laboratory equipment, loudspeakers, automotive components, and polymer banknotes. An addition polymer made from the monomer propylene, it is rugged and unusually resistant to many chemical solvents, bases and acids.(Wikipedia)
polystyrenePolystyrene (PS) is a synthetic aromatic polymer made from the monomer styrene, a liquid petrochemical. Polystyrene can be rigid or foamed. General purpose polystyrene is clear, hard and brittle. It is a very inexpensive resin per unit weight. It is a rather poor barrier to oxygen and water vapor and has relatively low melting point. Polystyrene can be naturally transparent, but can be colored with colorants. Uses include protective packaging. As a thermoplastic polymer, polystyrene is in a solid (glassy) state at room temperature but flows if heated above about 100 degree Celsius, its glass transition temperature. It becomes rigid again when cooled. This temperature behavior is exploited for extrusion, and also for molding and vacuum forming.(Wikipedia)
