hostage taking
An event in which one agent keeps another against his or her will, in order to force it or a third agent to accede to some demand. The hostages are typically kept in the place where they are first taken hostage, in contrast to a Kidnapping. Hostage taking often involves a number of people (although it may be just one), again, in contrast to a Kidnapping.
