Population: 6,000 speakers out of 20,000 population (1987 SIL). 103,255 ethnic Sioux in USA (1990 Census Bureau). Population total both countries: 6,000. Region: Northern Nebraska, southern Minnesota, North and South Dakota, northeastern Montana. Alternate names: LAKHOTA, TETON. Comments: Children are being raised speaking the language in the northern Plains (1998). Vigorous in some Lakota communities. Grammar. Also spoken in: Canada. (Language name: LAKOTA.)
