CaseRole
The Class of Predicates relating the spatially distinguished parts of a Process. CaseRoles include, for example, the agent, patient or destination of an action, the flammable substance in a burning process, or the water that falls in rain.

 arrested(arrested ?EVENT ?AGENT) means that during ?EVENT, ?AGENT is taken into custody, typically by a representative of a law enforcement organization.
 arrestingOfficerThe PoliceOfficer who is PlacingUnderArrest the arrested individual.
 objectAttachedRelates an object that is attached to the Process of Attaching.
 attends(attends ?DEMO ?PERSON) means that ?PERSON attends, i.e. is a member of the audience, of the performance event ?DEMO.
 attorneyThe role of being an attorney in a LegalAction. Note that this encompasses being an attorney for defense, prosecution or parties in civil cases.
 amountOfBidA CaseRole of Bidding identifying the CurrencyMeasure of the bid.
 brokerThis CaseRole relates an instance of a FinancialTransaction to the Broker of the sale.
 cargo(cargo ?EVENT ?OBJ) means that ?OBJ is transported as cargo in the Shipping event ?EVENT.
 catalystA relation between a ChemicalProcess and a Substance that acts to accelerate or enable the ChemicalProcess.
 changesLocation(changesLocation ?EVENT ?OBJECT) means that during the Translocation event ?EVENT, ?OBJECT's location changes. ?OBJECT might also be the agent, patient, or experiencer of ?EVENT.
 computerRunning(computerRunning ?Process ?Computer) means that the ComputerProcess ?Process is running on ?Computer.
 contestParticipant(contestParticipant ?CONTEST ?AGENT) means that ?AGENT is one of the sides in the Contest ?CONTEST. For example, if the ?CONTEST is a football game, then ?AGENT would be one of the opposing teams. For another example, if ?CONTEST is a Battle, then ?AGENT would be one of the sides fighting each other.
 controlled(controlled ?EVENT ?OBJECT) means that during the AchievingControl denoted by ?EVENT, ?OBJECT comes to be physically controlled by an AutonomousAgent.
 conveyance(conveyance ?EVENT ?OBJ) means that ?OBJ is the Vehicle or other transportation device used in ?EVENT.
 dataProcessedThe data being processed during a ComputerProcess.
 defendant(defendant ?AGENT ?ACTION) means the LegalAction ?ACTION makes a legal claim against ?AGENT.
 defenseLawyerThe representative of the defendant in a criminal case or the respondant in a civil one. The goal of the defense is to prevent or reduce any punishment imposed on the client as a result of the case.
 destination(destination ?PROCESS ?GOAL) means that ?GOAL is the target or goal of the Process ?PROCESS. For example, Danbury would be the destination in the following proposition: Bob went to Danbury. Note that this is a very general CaseRole and, in particular, that it covers the concepts of 'recipient' and 'beneficiary'. Thus, John would be the destination in the following proposition: Tom gave a book to John.
 objectDetachedRelates an object that is dettached to the Process of Detaching.
 detainee(detainee ?EVENT ?OBJECT) means that in the Confining ?EVENT, the Object ?OBJECT is restrained by force, threat, or other form of intimidation.
 eCommerceSiteThis CaseRole relates an instance of a FinancialTransaction to the WebSite that facilitaed the sale.
 eventLocated(eventLocated ?PROC ?OBJ) means that the entire Process ?PROC is located on Object ?OBJ, meaning that all subProcess of ?PROC is located on ?OBJ.
 eventPartlyLocated(eventPartlyLocated ?PROC ?OBJ) means that some subProcess of Process ?PROC is located in Object ?OBJ.
 evidenceA relation between a LegalAction and some Physical Object or Process that is used to support an Argument in a case.
 experiencer(experiencer ?PROCESS ?AGENT) means that ?AGENT experiences the Process ?PROCESS. For example, Yojo is the experiencer of seeing in the following proposition: Yojo sees the fish. Note that experiencer, unlike agent, does not entail a causal relation between its arguments.
 experimentalControl(experimentalControl ?EXPERIMENT ?OBJ) means that the Object ?OBJ serves as a control in the instance of Experimenting ?EXPERIMENT, i.e. ?OBJ is the standard against which something else in the experiment can be compared.
 experimenterThe CaseRole (experimenter ?EXPERIMENT ?HUMAN) means that ?HUMAN is one of the CognitiveAgents either conducting or analyzing the Experimenting ?EXPERIMENT.
 experimentalSubjectThe CaseRole (experimentalSubject ?EXPERIMENT ?SUBJECT) means that ?SUBJECT is a Human who is the experiencer of either and experimentalControlProcess or an experimentalVariableProcess.
 gainsControl(gainsControl ?EVENT ?AGENT) means that during ?EVENT, ?AGENT gains control of the patient (object).
 instrument(instrument ?EVENT ?TOOL) means that ?TOOL is used by an agent in bringing about ?EVENT and that ?TOOL is not changed by ?EVENT. For example, the key is an instrument in the following proposition: The key opened the door. Note that instrument and resource cannot be satisfied by the same ordered pair.
 invadingVirus(invadingVirus ?CELLINV ?VIRUS) means that ?VIRUS is a virus that invades a host cell in the cell invasion ?CELLINV. If the invasion results in a replication, it is the genome of the invading virus that is replicated. The original virus is destroyed but replicated in the process.
 judgeA CaseRole that relates the JudgeAtLaw in a case to a legal action. Note that this is not solely a LegalAction because a JudgeAtLaw presides over Pleadings and many other sorts of actions. Also note that just because someone is a JudgeAtLaw doesn't mean that they are always the judge in an action, for example if a judge is on trial for corruption.
 losesControl(losesControl ?EVENT ?AGENT) means that during ?EVENT, ?AGENT loses physical control of the controlled object.
 moves(moves ?MOTION ?OBJECT) means that during the Motion event ?MOTION, ?OBJECT moves. This does not necessarily imply that the location of ?OBJECT changes during ?MOTION. See also changesLocation and Translocation.
 objectTransferredA relation that specifies the object that is transferred during the process. For example, in a Mailing process, the object transferred is a letter or package.
 origin(origin ?PROCESS ?SOURCE) means that ?SOURCE indicates where the ?Process began. Note that this relation implies that ?SOURCE is present at the beginning of the process, but need not participate throughout the process. For example, the submarine is the origin in the following proposition: the missile was launched from a submarine.
 passengerThe CaseRole of being a passenger on a vehicle, rather than its driver or power source.
 path(path ?MOTION ?PATH) means that ?PATH is a route along which ?MOTION occurs. For example, Highway 101 is the path in the following proposition: the car drove up Highway 101.
 patient(patient ?PROCESS ?ENTITY) means that ?ENTITY is a participant in ?PROCESS that may be moved, said, experienced, etc. For example, the direct objects in the sentences 'The cat swallowed the canary' and 'Billy likes the beer' would be examples of patients. Note that the patient of a Process may or may not undergo structural change as a result of the Process. The CaseRole of patient is used when one wants to specify as broadly as possible the object of a Process.
 perpetratorA agent of a CriminalAction. Note that for some crimes like manslaughter the agent may not necessarily want the outcome. Note also that this relationship entails guilt.
 plaintiff(plaintiff ?ACTION ?AGENT) means that ?AGENT is responsible for initiating the LegalAction ?ACTION.
 playsThe CaseRole of being a player of a game, as opposed to a judge or other supporting role.
 prosecutorThe representative of the state in a criminal case. The goal of the prosecutor is an adversarial system is to convict the defendant.
 reactant(reactant ?PROCESS ?SUBSTANCE) means that ?SUBSTANCE is a chemical reactant in the chemical reaction ?PROCESS, i.e. ?SUBSTANCE is present at the beginning of the chemical reaction ?PROCESS.
 reagent(reagent ?PROCESS ?SUBSTANCE) means that ?SUBSTANCE is a chemical agent in the chemical reaction ?PROCESS.
 refereeThe CaseRole of being a judge or coordinator of a game, as opposed to a player in the game.
 resource(resource ?PROCESS ?RESOURCE) means that ?RESOURCE is present at the beginning of ?PROCESS, is used by ?PROCESS, and as a consequence is changed by ?PROCESS. For example, soap is a resource in the following proposition: the gun was carved out of soap. Note that resource differs from instrument, another subrelation of patient, in that its internal or physical properties are altered in some way by the Process.
 resourceConsumption(resourceConsumption ?PROCESS ?QUANT) means that ?PROCESS consumes an amount of the resource specified. The CaseRole resource is used in conjunction with resourceConsumption to specify the kind of resource used in the process. If the second argument is a ConstantQuantity.it will be the total consumption during the Process. If the second argument is a FuntionQuantity,it would be a rate of consumption over the time of the process.For example, in (equal ?QUANT (PerFn(MeasureFn ?Q ?U) (MeasureFn ?DC ?DU))), ?Q = 0.1, ?U = USGallon, ?DC = 1, ?DU = MinuteDuration.
 resourceExhausted(resourceExhausted ?PROCESS ?RESOURCE) means that ?RESOURCE is present at the beginning of ?PROCESS, is used by ?PROCESS, and as a consequence is completely used up by the ?PROCESS. For example, fuel is a resourceExhausted in the following proposition: the plane run out of fuel and ditched in the sea.
 resourceUsed(resourceUsed ?Process ?Resource) means that the ComputerProcess ?Process has access to the ComputerResource ?Resource.
 result(result ?ACTION ?OUTPUT) means that ?OUTPUT is a product of ?ACTION. For example, house is a result in the following proposition: Eric built a house.
 serviceProvider(serviceProvider ?EVENT ?AGENT) means that ?AGENT is the supplier of the service provided in ?EVENT.
 serviceRecipient(serviceRecipient ?EVENT ?AGENT) means that ?AGENT is the receiver of the service provided in ?EVENT.
 standardErrorDevice(standardErrorDevice ?PROGRAM ?DEVICE) holds just in case the DEVICE is the predefined error channel with which the running version of this program is initialised.
 standardInputDevice(standardInputDevice ?PROCESS ?DEVICE) holds just in case the DEVICE is the predefined input channel with which the running version of the program PROCESS is initialised.
 standardOutputDevice(standardOutputDevice ?PROGRAM ?DEVICE) holds just in case the DEVICE is the predefined output channel with which the running version of this program is initialised.
 suffersThe opposite of benefits. The Agent does not want the action to occur.
 targettarget is a subrelation of destination when there is a Projectile as an instrument. (destination ?A ?O) means that ?O is the target of an Attack ?A
 targetInAttackThis relation identifies the patient in the event that is the object of the attack.
 transported(transported ?EVENT ?OBJ) means that ?OBJ is transported (carried/moved to a different physical location) in the Transportation ?EVENT.
 victimThe one who is the object of a CriminalAction and suffers its results.
 witnessA party in a LegalAction who has been the experiencer in some prior event that is evidence for the case. Note that this excludes the 'expert witness' who is just offering an opinion on the evidence. Note also that the defendant also may take the stand as a witness in his or her own case, as may other parties to the case.
