Region: Southern Louisiana west of the Mississippi as far north as Avoyelles, Evangeline, Allen, and Calcasieu parishes. Alternate names: FRANCAIS ACADIEN, ACADIAN, CAJUN, CAJAN, CADIEN. Dialects: MARSH FRENCH, PRAIRIE FRENCH, BIG WOODS FRENCH. Comments: Ancestors came from French Canada in the 18th century. It is reported that Cajun speakers can partially understand Standard French, but Cajun is difficult for some Standard French speakers. Different from the variety of 'Broken French' used by 8,000 African Americans, or the 'Napoleanic Era French' (located around Houma and north of Theriot on Hwy. 315, speaking an archaic French and English). Many are reported to have limited proficiency in English. Some use Cajun English. Most under 50 speak English as first language, Cajun as second. Alternate names: ROUCHI, CHTIMI. Dialects: PONTHIEU, VIMEU, HAINAUT, ARTOIS, LILLOIS, BOULONNAIS, SANTERRE, CALAISIS, CAMBRESIS, VERMANDOIS, AMIENOIS. Comments: All dialects, including those in Belgium are inherently intelligible to speakers. French is spoken at school, in court, for administration, with outsiders. Home, family, friends, in local stores. The Belgian government recognizes Picard officially as an indigenous regional language.
